One of the most important things you can do on your Big Green Egg is maintain it, so that you will get many years of trouble-free use.

The BGE has quite a few nuts and bolts that keep it in alignment and firmly on the roll around cart (BGE calls this the nest). We recommend that you check them all and tighten them once a month. Odds are that they are fine, but any good tool needs scheduled maintenance. The BGE is no different.

You will need a phillips head screw driver and open-end wrenches in 7/16″, 9/16″ and 1/2″ sizes. We painted ours a bright “egg” green spray paint so we could easily locate them. Tighten firmly but do not get too crazy.

As the BGE works by burning lump charcoal, it requires good airflow to work at it’s maximum potential. About every 10-15 uses you should remove the unused charcoal (save it for later) and remove the fire ring, fire grate and firebox, and then sweep or vacuum out and debris that has built up. This will ensure full airflow and make it easier to control the temperatures. If you find that you can no longer get extremely high temperatures this is most likely the reason.
